Surah Al-Ikhlas

Ya Rabb forgive me; I used to read Surah Al-Ikhlas simply because it was short and easy. Just four verses. However, now that I have learned the beauty of this Surah, I am in awe and choose to recite it in my prayers out of love not convenience.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١

Say, ‘He is God the One

ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ٢

Allah – the fulfiller of all needs

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٣

He begot no one nor was He begotten

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ ٤

No one is comparable to Him

I love that one of the companions called this Surah “A description of Ar-Rahman”. It beautifully explains the Oneness of the Creator, there is none like Him, ever was, and never will be.

It is Oneness from the worship of other so-called Gods. We Muslims have no problem with that, Allah is the only God. However, just saying لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ and embodying it are two different things. For example Allah says in the second verse that He is the fulfiller of all needs; but who do we call upon when we need something? Do we trust that our protection, provision, future are with Him alone? Or does someone else get to dangle that in front of us?

Are we busy pursuing what is pleasing to Allah or do we strive for the validation of our Parents? Friends? Society?

Do we ignore the words of the Most High because it contradicts what our hearts want?

Is Allah truly ONE in our hearts?

I hope so and if not I ask that Allah remove all the hidden idols.

Every Ramadan, Surah Al-Ikhlas is read in every Witr prayer. That is the power of this Surah, the Oneness of Allah. A Creator who has no limits, no beginning, no end.

About this Surah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to one-third of the Qur’an.

Whoever recites Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.

Whoever recites the three Quls in the morning and evening will be protected from everything.

Peace and blessings upon the Nabi of Allah.
